There are growing numbers of medically fragile infants entering the foster care system. Some of these cases are attributable to epidemic drug use by pregnant women which have resulted in premature births and children with medical and developmental complications. In other cases the child may have become medically fragile at the hands of their parents and a return to their biological home is not in the child's best interest. The foster care system is heavily burdened with an influx of medically fragile infants and children who need help.
Local resources have been, and continue to be, strained to the limit in dealing with the expanding number of these and other medically fragile foster children. The foster care system, while a protector of and quasi-surrogate parent for children placed in their care, is not an adequate parent. The children lack consistency in their lives at every level. A child may have as many as four to six different social workers per year assigned, depending how long they are in the system. The children are harder to place with the average foster parent because of their special needs, and they become the forgotten members of our society. Left alone in hospitals, institutions and group homes inevitably identified as “failure to thrive”, and frequent flyers- recurrent visitors into our local hospitals pediatric units or pediatric intensive care units.
This increase in hospital readmission rates is not noted within the nurses-foster parent population because highly skilled nurses are able to identify potential issues and mitigate them prior to the child needing hospitalization.

Angels in Waiting is a non-profit charity of neonatal and pediatric intensive care nurses dedicated to placing "medically fragile" foster care infants and children into homes of qualified nurses. Otherwise these "high risk" infants and children get lost in the foster care system and are usually fighting to survive, and doing it all alone with minimal support.
Angels In Waiting comes to the rescue…We recruit skilled independent nurse providers as Nurse-Foster Parents to reach out to a Medically Fragile Foster Child–In–Need.
For those of us who are not nurses, we all can support this "critical care" cause by providing resources and financial donations to AIW.
